WITNESS UGANDA  In the Spring, Matt and playwright Lucy Thurber completed a commission for Playwrights Horizons called Dillingham City.  Twilight in Manchego was an official selection of the 2008 New York Musical Theater Festival's Next Link Project! It maps the story of Esau Munsey, who leaves a haunted past in the city to teach fourth grade in a provincial elementary school. But his intentions to provoke change in an outdated education system distract him from the students he really wants to inspire. When Esau's history repeats itself and the small town of Manchego is struck by tragedy, Esau must finally put to rest the ghosts of his past and make peace with himself and his choices.  Matt Gould is the Jonathan Larson Award winning composer who seduces audiences with what Backstage Magazine calls "a melodic gift." TESTIFY (presented by New York Theatre Barn on Monday June 29, 2009 as part of the "NYTB at the Duplex" series) is a testament to the fact that New York City has a new player on the music theatre scene.  Matt Gould was commissioned by LA's REPRISE Theatre Company to write and direct this special event. Free Style featured collaborations between 15 young lyricists from LA and top composers from the pop music world and Broadway, including Desmond Child ("Livin' La Vida Loca") and Stephen Bray (Madonna's "Into the Groove", the score to The Color Purple). Special guests include The Cosby Show's Malcolm-Jamal Warner and members of acclaimed dance troupe The Groovaloos. Reprise is headed by Artistic Director, Jason Alexander (Seinfeld and many other productions). ________________________________________ |
